RIP #VidalSassoon

One of the true icons of hairdressing, Vidal Sassoon has died aged 84. His sharp, geometric, low-maintenance 60s hairstyles revolutionised the industry, a world away from the stiff, set hairdos of the 1950s. Here are some of our favourite Sassoon styles from the 60’s:

Braids are the trend! Why dont you try yourself?
here is a step by step to help you to get the perfect style!
Braided BunPerfect for medium to long hair.
1. On dry, make a natural side part with a comb or by raking your fingers through hair.
2. Create a French braid with three 1″ sections of hair following your hairline. This can be done by taking the left section and crossing it over the center section. Next, take the right section and cross it over the center one. As you continue to move backward away from your part, collect hair on both sides of your braid to create a thicker French braid. Secure the braid with a small, clear elastic band, leaving about 3″ of loose hair at the end.
3. Take the end of your braid and the rest of your hair and bring together into a ponytail. Twist it into a bun just at the nape of your neck and secure with bobby pins.

Claire’s Royal Count Down Part 2

The Duchess of Cambridge has been influencing hair & makeup styles across the globe since before her official entry into the Royal family.

It’s well documented that Kate does her own makeup. Sticking to neutral colour palette of soft brown eyeshadow, rosey blush and a natural warm pink lip, it’s a timeless look. That said, I wish she would go a bit easier on the black eyeliner, she is a natural beauty and should let that shine through more often!

I do love Kate for her brows though. Always full and well kept, they frame her whole face as well as her eyes. You can visit us at Butterfly for a Brow Tidy and/or Tint to get the polished Duchess look.

And you can always count on Kate for a beautiful, shiny blow dry with great volume and soft curls. She’s made it her trade-mark! Definitely a style worth stealing.

Carey Mulligan gets married!!

With the news that Carey Mulligan married her beau Marcus Mumford last week I thought I would post some of my fave images of her.

She wore apparently wore a Prada dress with wellingtons in the cermony on a farm, cant wait to see some images of her make up - im guessing clean and classic as usual. She has an understated simple, yet endearing beauty similiar to another of my Favourite actress’s Michelle Williams.

If you want to copy her look, go for soft smokey eyes or be bold and pair a classic red lip with defined brows. If you dont feel brave enough to have a go yourself pop in and get one of our artists to show you how its done! x

Claire’s Royal Count Down Part 1

With 5 weeks to go till the Queen’s Jubilee, I wanted to share my thoughts on how to get the regal look for all you would-be princesses out there.

Top of the list is everyone’s favourite grandma, our Liz.

Her majesty lets natural beauty reign but still utilises a few top makeup tricks. You too can follow suit by copying the subtle highlighting on the eye lids and under the brow bone to give a lifting effect to the eyes and face.

As we get older, the skin loses colour as it becomes thinner. A healthy dose of blush will help brighten your complexion, or as Her Majesty demonstrates, a nice rosey lipstick is a flattering pick-me-up, without being too harsh or bright for one’s dainty face.

Next time: We look at the newest member of the Royal family: Kate Middleton

Hippy Hair!

As much as the weather fights against it, it is spring, and coming up to summer! When it comes to summer hair I think you should take inspiration from Michael Kors SS/2012 and create a unique ‘Hippy Hair Do’ of your own.

The key to this uber cool laid back style is to introduce some black/beige ribbon and/or some other kind of string (maybe even leather binding) My advice is to get creative in an arts and crafts shop!

Prep the hair with a salt spray to give it that tussled texture, then plait the ribbon through the hair, or maybe even create a low pony tail and tie your ribbon round the pony tail securing it with a knot at the bottom. There aren’t any rules here it’s a chance to get creative and make your own personalised hair style. Fish by ‘roughing’ up the hair, pull random strands out and tease the hair in parts to make more bulky, set with hair spray.

This style is perfect for festivals and summer parties, now we just need some sun…..

My Favorite brush!
So i thought i’d share some knowledge on brushes, i’ve attached an image of the starter brush roll we sell here at Butterfly. All of which will last you a life time if you look after them and they will see you though a wide range of looks.
My personal favorite which i could not live without is the ‘fluffy brush’, there’s nothing worse than make-up which hasn’t been properly blended. Harsh lines can look very ageing unless it’s a definite part of the look and you want to look more edgy. so what ever you use to apply your eye shadow, whether it’s a sponge applicator, or your finger, make sure you use a fluffy brush to blend colours together; and soften the look making your eyes look bigger.

Mad Men season has started..

Now that Mad Men is back for another series and showing us how to dress for work with style why not take inspiration from the goregous girls and get the office turning heads..

A sleek blow dry with volume at the roots with a few GHD curls at the ends will help achieve those sultry 60’s waves like Betty or back brush the crown of your head to create a beehive then pinned up at the back either into a roll or to keep it soft pin them randomly, just like Joan. Either style the girls at Butterfly will show you how its done..whether it is a beehive, bouffaunt or the classic bold black eyeliner…
